Optivation was established in 2007. Its main activity has been to develop fast optimization software for automated containership stowage planning. We bluntly declare ourselves internationally leading in this field since our work builds directly on leading algorithmic approaches that we have developed during more than 7 years of focused research on stowage planning at the Decision Optimization Lab at the IT University of Copenhagen.
We also have developed advanced data mining software for predicting customer behavior from transactional data in the retail and logistics business and expect cargo forecasting to be a major topic in the future.
Typically, our approach is to contract in required analytics experts and programmers on a project to project basis from our professional network and work closely together with customer teams through a steering group. We normally work in geographically distributed R&D teams and use cloud technology to efficiently communicate and share data.

Rune Møller Jensen, Chief Executive Officer,

Rune is Associate Professor at the IT University of Copenhagen and director of the Decision Optimization Lab where he supervises three Ph.D. students. He received his Ph.D. from the Computer Science Department at Carnegie Mellon University and was awarded "Hede Nielsen-Prisen" for his work on combining symbolic and heuristic search. His research collaboration on containership stowage planning with A.P. Moeller-Maersk has received more than DKK 6M in external funding. Rune has expertise within a wide range of optimization techniques including meta-heuristics, constraint programming, large neighborhood search, integer and linear programming, dynamic programming, constructive heuristics, binary decision diagrams, and configuration. He also works on data mining using machine learning algorithms such as decision tree learning, neural networks, Bayesian classifiers, and conditional random fields. CV, Academic Homepage

Kai is former Manager of Product Planning and Business Development at Bang & Olufsen A/S. He has more than 10 years experience as Management Consultant at Sant + Bendix and PricewatehouseCoopers Consultants. He is co-founder and former Vice President of LEDlumina and LEDlumina Technology.

Alberto has been a PhD Student at the Decision Optimization Lab since 2007. He has developed fast and optimal constraint programming algorithms for assigning containers to slots in containership bays. He has also worked as an industrial PhD with Ange Optimization , where he developed the optimization parts of the commercial stowage tool, Angle Stow. Alberto is an experienced optimization expert mastering mathematical programming, constraint programming, and meta heuristics. He has worked with the container stowage problem in a business setting for more than 5 years and is a leading optimization expert within this domain.

Dario is a newly appointed Assistant Professor at the Department of Transport of the Technical University of Denmark and holds a PhD from the IT University of Copenhagen. He has worked intensively with stowage planning optimization algorithms since 2008. His work includes fast meta heuristics for stowage of containership bays and complete mixed integer programming models for distributing containers over bays such that port stay is minimized. Like Alberto, he has worked with the containership stowage problem in a business setting for more than 5 years and is a leading optimization expert within this domain.

Martin is a talented programmer and optimization scholar. His MSc thesis from the IT University compares SAT and BDD-based approaches to interactive stowage plan reconfiguration. He has programmed advanced web GUIs for prototype optimization systems at Optivation and he has assisted testing and building stowage optimization models for large container vessels.
